Thailand (2)

To the North stands the old capital, Ayuthaya, the site of many ancient battles.

The palaces
and temples
may have lost some color
        but not their grace.
The bricks form patterns everywhere
and
sun and shadows
fall across
the walls.
There are many children, even in the old city,

selling things,
  playing,
    dreaming,
      dancing
among their ancestors.

High in the misty hills beyond Chiang Mai,
small towns
lie clustered
along the banks
of streams and rivers.
If the river
is big enough,
villagers build bamboo rafts
to carry goods and people.
They also use elephants to haul lumber and water.
Children chase baby chicks to put them in baskets
for the night
while others watch.
